The Owerri correctional facility was attacked by gunmen on Monday morning. A total of one thousand five hundred inmates were released. This event was truly a travesty, having you question the security in Nigeria and the people protecting it.

The Nigerian Police and their ‘peace’

The gunmen are said to have also infiltrated the Imo State Police Command Headquarters and burnt all the vehicles in the parking lot. They were reported to have been working from one to three in the morning.

It begs the question whether the people trained to protect us are doing their job correctly and whether the peace of Nigeria and be kept with such flimsy protection. How can a whole prison that houses Nigeria’s lawbreakers be so easily infiltrated.

It saddens me to think that Nigeria will soon be plunged into an irreversible state of insecurity and conflict. The thing I ask myself every day: how can we solve the problem of insecurity in Nigeria?

We are told over and over and again by our security officers that they’d deal with all the crimes being done, but nothing is ever done. An endless cycle of empty promises and unreliability. Time will tell if I will ever wake up one day and not hear about some horrible thing happening in the country.

“Peace will come,” they say.

“Nigeria will change,” they say for the thousandth time.

I plead and ask. “When will it?”
